HP installation done correctly?

I recently installed an HP Deskjet 5400 printer for a relative. Her
computer is a desktop, running XP Home SP2. Installation was a bit more
complicated than I expected, but the printer appears to work just fine.
However, when I look at Device Manager on her computer, I noticed these two
items:

IEEE 1284.4 compatible printers
HP Deskjet 5400 Series (DOT4)

IEEE 1284.4 devices
HP Deskjet 5400 Series (DOT4)

Should they be listed twice? Also, in the systray, the USB icon is
displayed when this printer is plugged in. With my Canon USB printer, that
doesn't happen on my computer.

My Epson is listed twice, looking at what drivers each is
using one is the MS$ one, the other the Epson drivers.
Looking further this is apparently a known problem, and
you can't get rid of the MS$ drivers, it does a detected
new hardware and promptly puts them back.

Actually, the HP 5400 printer is listed 3 times in Device Manager!
It's also found under the heading of NULL HPF13, whatever the heck that
means.

You could just delete it out of Device Manager and see if it
reappears, but I don't see any need to do that. HPs tend to have
massive drivers that may indeed count as 'two devices'.

Actually, if you mean the 'usb icon' that's the little green
downwards/left pointing arrow with what appears to be a street drain
grate underneath it: does your printer have camera card slots? I see
no printer on HP's website that actually has 5400 as the model number,
only 5400 series that includes the 5420/5440/etc, so you would have to
be more specific with the model number. If it has card slots, then
that's technically counted as a separate device by Windows and will
both show the USB icon and two items in the device manager.

The printer has a USB port for digital cameras, meaning it is
PictBridge compatible. The only model number I know is HP DJ5440.
