HP printer with USB will not work with Vista (32/Premium)

T

Troels

:?
I Have a HP Pavillion 7733 with Vista Home Premium. My printer is a HP
LJ1300 which previously has been used on XP.
When I plug In on the Vista machine I get the sound - and a new device
appears in device properties under IEEE1284.4 devices. The unit is
correctly identified as a "HP LaserJet 1300 series (DOT4USB)".
However, the printer has not been installed under "Printers".
I have then fried to install a std. HP LJ1300 using LPT1:
Afterwards I have tried to change the port to Dot4_USB - but there are
no Dot4 ports available. After contact with HP support I have
downloaded the program
"ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software8/COL17364/dj-46093-3/HP_Vista_SF_Ph1.exe"...
After installing this program the system reports that the Dot4 ports
are installed. But no change. The printer appears under 1284.4 devices
- but not under printers - and the only ports available are Local or
TCP/IP..
I would very much appreciate any help on this matter.
Regards from a frustrated Dane...
Troels

I don't know if this is a USB or a parallel port connected printer and
because it is discontinued the HP website does not give specifications
to look up. Which are you using?

Have a look at this article on setting up under VISTA:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?
lang=en&cc=us&taskId=115&prodSeriesId=238320&prodTypeId=18972&prodSerie
sId=238320&objectID=c00784183

and in particular what it says about selecting ports.

Did you install any software for the printer other than the download
you mentioned?

Let me know the answers to the questions here about connection and
software and we may be able to move on.

Hi again,

The printer is a USB device (and works fine using Dot4 under XP).
I have installed it on Vista using the same driver.
I have read the HP article- but my problem is, that the selection Dot4 USB
is not offered under ports, just local and tcp/ip...
I have no other printing software installed - just barebone Vista..
Thanks for your help on this..

EUREKA.... fixed it...
Here are the details:
After installing the HP_Vista_SF_Ph1.exe... some additional drivers for USB
were apparently installed.
Under Device manager\IEEE1284.4 compatible devices I used Update
driver\search driver on this computer\select a driver on this computer (I
have a danish system so the terms may be other in US versions.).. On this tab
I get 3 choices: 1) HP LaserJet 1300 Series (DOT4USB), 2)Support for DOT4USB
printing and 3) Support for USB printing...
I selected 2) and restarted...
I now get an additional entry under device manager: IEEE1284.4 compatible
printer... and on the printer tab I get both the LJ1300 PCL as well as the
LJ1300 PS... and they both work fine - on the local USB-port as well as the
USB port on my ROLINE 4:1 switch, i.e. I can switch the printer to my 3
PC's... Great.
Thanks for helping me out....

Good news indeed -- some of it sounds familiar although I didn't have
to do it myself for my LJ2200d.

I just got off the phone with tec support at HP. They tranfered me to the
supervisor who told me that Microsoft should have waited to roll ourt Vista
untill Hp was able to update their drivers. The drivers will be ready by
March 2nd on their site for download. Tec support got 5800 calls today alone.
Any lexmark or cannon may take longer.

Yes -- I've seen their listing of dates for different products -- some
of the high tech design jets and scanners they are talking of September
2007!

Thanks for the additional information.

That's one of the funniest things I've ever read. Vista was in beta testing
forever. And HP thinks that the world revolves around them????? They
should have got off their lazy ***** and done some work during testing like
the rest of us. As for the others, Epson, Canon and Lexmark seem to have a
lot of drivers already testing and on their sites for download. There are a
few ancient Lexmarks and Epsons with problems, haven't come across any
Canons yet. All my Canons are fine, ditto with my Lexmark and Epson.
Sorry, not an HP anything in sight in this household.
