USB Mass Storage not being recongize ?

hi ther
i have a USB portable harddisk and is having problem installing it. It supposingly to be using default XP mass storage driver

i have two machines (both XP-pro): one machine recongize it as "mass storage" and install the standard USBStorg.sys driver; but on the other machine, it is only recongized as "Unknown device" after i plugged it in

there isnt seems to be a way to force a device to use a certain driver. And i dont have any network drives mapped at all

Did you ever find an answer? I have the exact same problem. This is on a
system that had recognized this USB disk in the past.
