usb mass storage device code 10

Hi,

My external HDD was working fine until yesterday. Windows installed a few
updates, and now the computer won't boot up if the external HDD is turned on.
If I turn it on after booting, in the hardware manager, it shows up with the
exclamation point, and a code 10. (The device cannot start).

I already have sp2 installed, and have everything pretty much up to date.
The usbstor.sys file is dated 7/1/2001.

Regards,
Mridul.

I am having ths same problem. I have a Western Digital External USB Hard
Drive. Running XP SP2 on a P4 2.53 GHz CPU, Intel MB with 1G RAM. The drive
was fine and I'm not sure when the problem started. When connecting, it
originally showed up in my Device Manger as another Hard Drive, but upon
rebooting, it shows up as a USB Mass Storage Device with the little yellow
marker and a Code 10 saying it is unable to start. According to WD, it
should be Plug and Play and XP should recognize the drive, which it did when
I first installed it over a year ago. I've tried everything, including
connecting it to another XP SP2 computer, but get the same message. Any
ideas out there? Thanks.

Hi,

I got it to work... I was moving to a new apt the prev. day, and the move
possibly jogged some connection in the external drive. I just removed the HDD
from the external case & put it back in again. It worked.

Hope this helps..
