USB Malfuction

HI
Need some help. I have a hp ipaq2495. Worked fine until recently cannot
hot sync.
Getting message that USB device malfuctioned. Did a clean reset on IPAQ and
removed and reinstalled active sync. Synced once then would not connect
again. Did the reset thing again and would not work. In device manager get
the message that there is no drivers for this device installed and cannot get
it to recognize device any suggestions?

PDA's can draw a large amount of the available 500mA of the USB Root
Hub. Do you have a large number of USB peripherals in your computer ?

You may have a number of "Phantom" instances of your IPAQ in Device
Manager as a separate issue. You may need to remove those and also do
a Partnership purge of ActiveSync. Unfortunately getting PDAs to work
and work consistently with Windows can be an ongoing PITA.

All I have besides the pda is my printer on usb and that is all. What do
you mean by phantom instances? How do I do a partnership purge?

"Phantom" devices are device "definitions" that still exist on Device
Manager but the XP does not see this device at that "position." Since
USB devices can change USB ports, each USB port can / may re-detect
the USB device and assign a different "device" name. (Classic example
is when an "analog" modem definiation chnages to "#2, #3......")

One possible way to fix this is to access Device Manager with telling
"it" to show all devices, including "hidden" ones (Option in Device
Manager "toolbar.")

Simple batch file listed :

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
cd %SystemRoot%\System32
start devmgmt.msc

Remove all the "phantom" (aka "pale") devices.

iPAQs have their own internal battery and so don't draw anything at all from
the USB port.

First, *backup* your iPAQ to a FLASH card. Try connecting to another PC
that has the ActiceSync software installed. Set up a 'Guest' partnership.
If this gives problems, then hard reset your iPAQ (hold in the reset button
while turning on). Once you have gone through all the configuration
rubbish, try to set up the 'guest' partnership on the second PC again. By
now you will know if its the hardware or the software on your iPAQ. Normal
operation can be restored by restoring the backup back to the iPAQ.

*If you iadvertantly set up a named partnership, don't worry, you can undo
the damage at the last stage.

That should be "some iPAQs have a separate AC charger connected to the

----------------

They definitely have an internal battery. Otherwise, how would they work
away from the charger? iPAQs do not draw current from the USB port when
connected. This can be verified by looking at the power tab on the
appropriate hub where the negotiated current availablilty is shown as '0
mA'.

All PDA's have an internal battery, the reason they draw USB current is
to recharge the rechargable battery, reasons a PDA would not draw USB
current are it doesn't connect to USB port, it wasn't designed with a
rechargeable battery, or it is supplied with power from another external
source like an AC adapter.

-----------

We are specifically talking about iPAQ PDAs here. iPAQs do not charge their
internal battery from the USB port. When inserted in their cradle, the
charge current comes from the attached power supply. This supply is not
required for USB communications which will take place without the supply
connected. If connected to a USB port via a dedicated lead (i.e. without a
cradle) no battery charging takes place.
