usb drivers gone or corrupt - reinstall sp3 ?

xp has recently had problems detecting and installing standard drivers for
simple usb devices like camera and usb stick. i get message on some like
"no driver found". i'm thinking i want to try to reinstall the xp usb
drivers. what's the best way to do this please ? i have sp3 - is there a
way to reinstall the sp3, or is this overkill ?

You could try installing the Intel Chipset Software Installation
Utility from Intel's site *if* this is an Intel-based machine.

umm it's a bx chipset. don't laugh. it's intel, but i don't see that one
listed by intel as supported by this install

no it runs a P3. i found the chipset drivers for it on the intel site.
i ran the install and it told me there was no need - i had the latest
drivers. and usb is still messed up.
i have some devices that work ok on the usb hub, others wont detect and
freeze up the pc

of course. BIOS hasn't changed on this machine in years. not sure what
that has to do with win xp usb drivers....

thanks i tried all except the repair, and still no luck. is there some way
to reinstall just the native usb drivers (substor.sys, etc) without a repair
install ?

Nope.

i dont know. i just took the usbstor.sys from the service pack folder and
copied it into the sys/driver folder, overwriting what was in there. i
didn't think it wouuld do anything, cause it looked identical. but it works
now ! eh....

and now it's dead again rats. im gonna try reinstall sp3 over top, see if
that gives me fresh usb.
