usb driver problem

I got a probem on XP Home SP2. Some USB dvices work ok, but some (like
Thomson SpeedTouch USB ADSL modem and iPod shuffle) aren't properly
recognized. The new hardware creator recognizes new hardware, tries to
install drivers (for example for mass USB storage device) but fails
saying "Cannot find the file specified" - or something very similiar,
this windows version isn't english). After it finishes (I click close),
it pops up again and tries to do the same thing.

The hardware works on other computers. I got avast anti virus, ad-aware
and spybot.

I suspect there is something wrong with windows USB driver or new
hardare wizard itself, I want to try something before reinstalling the
system.

i dont think its a problem with
the o.s.

could be simply a
mechanical issue, like
a bad usb connec-tor/-tion

or maybe usb port speeds
are mismatched, eg usb 1.0 and
usb 2.0.

there is also a freeware from microsoft.com
that might help as well. Look for something
related to "usb power management" or
similar (can't recall the exact file name)...

I have looked at the websites posted among others and have not found them
helpful so far.

My usbstor.inf file appears to be valid. I've tried replacing usbstor.sys,
as well, and it made no difference.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks. The links you referred me to did the trick, with a little added
guesswork on my part. It was a permissions problem in the registry. Once I
found the entry for my device and set the permissions to allow full control
(and rebooted), the device installed with no problem. The only difference
from the links you posted was that these were USB devices, not PCI card
devices, so the registry entry I was looking for (and eventually found) was
under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Enum/USB.

Thanks for the help! I have no idea how I ever would have found
this/figured this out otherwise! You'd think MS would put something in their
Knowledge Base about this.
