USB device (Mbox) not recognized, Hardware Wizard won't open, XPautomatically installs as "unknown d

When I plug my digidesign Mbox into a usb port, the Hardware Wizard
doesn't come up, and Windows installs the device as "unknown device"
under USB controllers in Device Manager.

Nothing I do seems to be able to interrupt Windows from automatically
installing the device as "unknown". I've tried plugging the device in
when the computer was shut off, then powering up, I've tried opening the
Hardware Wizard first from Control Panel, then plugging in the Mbox,
I've tried plugging the Mbox in, uninstalling it from Device Manager,
then installing ProTools (which has the device drivers), then
restarting, and every other combination of the above I could think of,
and nothing works.

I've been in touch with Digidesign and they can't figure it out - they
suggested that my Windows installation may be corrupted and I should do
a clean install of Windows, but I'm having a hard time swallowing that -
all other USB devices I have work just fine, in fact the whole PC is
working great except for this problem.

I have a home built PC with a P4 2.8c and a Gigabyte motherboard with an
Intel 875P chipset, and 1024 MB of dual channel 400mhz memory. My OS is
Windows XP Pro.
