"USB Sound Device"

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

I'm trying to attach a McLelland USB Preamp to my desktop PC. The desktop
PC is running fully patched Windows XP Pro SP2. This device is supposed to
come up as "USB Sound Device" which it does in Add Hardware Wizard. It is
also supposed to use the defauilt USB drivers included with Windows, but the
Add Hardware Wizard can't find drivers for it.

My laptop Windows XP Media Center finds the preamp as a USB Audio Device and
it works fine there.

Now I'm more than a bit annoyed. I'd gone through the tech support line on
4/3/2008 (req: 1063428025) and the specialist was in the right area but took
a wrong turn.

The specialist had renamed the files "wdma_usb.inf" to "wdma_usbinf.bak" and
"wdma_usb.PNF" to "wdma_usbpnf.bak".

I was led back to these files by my laptop. I started searching .inf files
in /windows/inf for driver names like "usbaudio" that my laptop was using.
On the laptop four .inf files including wdma_usb.inf came up. I went back to
the desktop and found the files renamed. I renamed them back.

The Add Hardware wizard still didn't find drivers on its own, but this time
when I did Add Hardware I could manually select USB controllers from the
list. Then USB Audio Device was an option. QED.

Just wanted to say that this post has been very helpful to me.

I have a midi <-> usb cable that doesn't come with a driver. It is supposed to plug into a PC running Windows XP and just work, using standard windows drivers.

But that didn't happen for me. Windows 'found new hardware' OK but then, instead of finding the driver and identifying the cable as a ?USB Audio Device? as I expected, windows reported that it couldn't find software for my hardware and that it probably wouldn?t be working, I wasn't. I tried again, telling windows to look in various folders for the drivers, but to no avail.

Then, after much searching, I saw this post and started looking for the file:- wdma_usb.inf. I found it in \windows\system32\reinstallbackups\0016\driverfiles and moved it to \windows\inf.

Bingo.
