Hardware Manager indicates "Unknown Device"

All of a sudden all of my USB ports have decided to malfunction. After
right clicking the USB symbol in Device Manager the device status box
indicates "No drivers are installed for this device." On further reading I am
being told that USB ports do not use a driver ! I usually use one of these
particular port for charging and music transfer of two IPODS. It has been
working fine. I even plugged in one of those USB flash drives, which I know
is working fine, and the same problem occurs. I tried plugging in the IPODS
in the other three USB ports on my computer with the same problem taking
place. My printer is plugged into one of the ports and does NOT work either
but there is no indication of a problem in device manager. My mouse is USB
and it works fine. Help would be appreciated with this problem.
Thanks in advance to all!

I have similar problem with my USB port once, and i managed to solved it with
the following :

Open registry, and find the following key :
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR]
Look at the value of "Start". If the value is other than "3", change it to
"3".

If after that it ask for driver when you plug in the device, insert your
windows XP CD. If it ask for USBSTOR, point it to
"C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\USBSTOR".

Please let me know if it works. If it is not working, please be more
specific about what happen when you plug in the usb device. Is there any
error dialog or maybe it is just plain silent?

Hello Mr. Tandiono,
I'm currently having the same problem and I followed your steps and I do
have a "3" as you indicated can it be something else?
