USB 2.0 Hi Speed

Hi. I installed a four port PCI USB 2.0 card after Microsoft added 2.0
in the SP2 update, but recently when I plugged in a new scanner, it said
the device would work faster if I used a USB 2.0 'Hi Speed' port.
My question is; do I now need to replace my PCI card or can I use a Hi
Speed USB 2.0 hub, plugged into my 2.0 PCI card . Thanks guys. deango

If the device is a USB v2.0 compliant device and the PCI card delivers USB v2.0 compliant
ports than consider that message to be a bug in itself ! Ignore it.

It could be that your scanner operates somewhat outside the normal USB 2
parameters and that you need to install a special driver for the scanner to
be seen as USB 2. My Canon scanner would not operate at USB 2.0 level until
I installed their software and drivers.

Check in Device Manager , see if any yellow exclamation marks show up.
If so ,install

Why would you use a hub with 4 ports on the card?
Unusual scanner, noted no drivers installed.

Three of the ports are already in use. Printer, External Hard Drive and
a 4X6 photo printer. The last port was used to plug in the Hi Speed
Hub. And the scanner has drivers, it was just when I started it to scan
that I got the message about going faster with Hi Speed 2.0.

3 ports used, one available and you plugged a hub in it, then the scanner
into the hub. Why the hub, as I previously mentioned?

Many people want the hub because it is easier to access than the back of the
computer...
I usually install a front panel USB/firewire access point to avoid standing
on my head.
There are several that go in an open CD sized front panel and I've seen a
couple that fit an opening the size of a floppy drive.

Why would plug in and unplug a scanner on a regular basis? Its normally not
moved, which is the basis for a convenience purpose hub.

So, again, why the hub?
And, have you tried it without the hub?

The hub must be powered with an external power supply and
it needs to be a USB 2.0 hub, many hubs are limited to USB
1.1.

Distractor. Statement of fact not related.

Read the OP. USB 2.0 card. Scanners require no power for their bus,
whatever the data movement is. Serial, scsi, parallel, usb.

Again, why the hub.

J

Jim Macklin

The OP said he used a hub. If the hub isn't powered, then
there may not be enough power on the chained port to run the
scanner. Any hub must be USB 2.0 if the whole chain is to
work at USB 2.0 speed.

BTW, the OPs post "The last port was used to plug
in the Hi Speed Hub." A High Speed hub is USB 1.1, a USB
2.0 hub will say so, in my experience. Buy a new hub.

The only possibility of the USB peripherals is the external hard drive.
Which he doesn't comment on, and continue to wait an answer. Looking for
facts, not contentions of unknown possibilities.
