Question about usb 2.0 issues..

I have a ASUS A7V8X-7 board that I got brand new after
studying a number of boards online.

One feature that it is supposed to have is usb 2.0.

I am not the most savvy person regarding usb, so I have used
it for well over a year now (past the warranty), thinking I
had usb 2.0. I have even swapped it (on warranty) once, due
to a system failure.

Awhile back, with the old board, and even with this "new"
one, I noticed that when I plugged in peripherals, I was
getting a "high speed usb device plugged into a low-speed
usb port".

I didn't understand that at first, then I guessed that I
simply had to get usb 2.0 hubs, and that-- instead-- I had
MISTAKENLY gotten usb 1.1 hubs.

My son recently gave me a usb 2.0 hub.

I have also downloaded all the correct drivers, and I now
have two usb 2.0 driver install cds.

With all this hardware, and with drivers I KNOW are 2.0, I
still have ONLY usb 1.1 on my system, and every time I plug
in a usb peripheral, I get the "high speed peripheral
plugged into a low-speed hub."

I KNOW that SP 2 contains usb 2.0 drivers, and I have loaded
it several times now (during different installs).

Nothing makes my board's usb 2.0.

Now that I realize that evidently, my board is DEFECTIVE and
does NOT contain usb 2.0, ASUS will not reply to my queries.

All that to say this.

Now that I have explained my problem, I am wiling to buy a
PCI card that is usb 2.0

BUT, if I install a usb 2.0 PCI card in my 1.1 system, am I
going to FINALLY have usb 2.0 from that add-on card, or am I
stuck with usb 1.1 until I change boards?

I do not mind buying a PCI card, but I don't want to spend
money if it's not going to help.

Help?

If you mean an Asus A7V8X-X board then it does have USB 2.0 on it. You need
SP2 installed to get the USB 2.0 driver stack (four files I think?).
Remove the entire USB branch in Device Manager, and reboot.

I had issues with USB on several A7V8X-X's a while back, and had to fight
with patches - if the above doesn't work I'll re-research it. i.e. dig
through my 2nd hd !!!

Motherboards come with driver CDs. USB 2.0 driver, if applicable, comes on
that CD. The driver is separate from the big driver for the motherboard
chipset/ide/sata/usb 1.1 et al.
Don't think XP supports all manufacturer's USB 2.0 chip implementation by
providing a driver for each. Common ones are VIA, TI, and NEC.
