USB 2.0 help

M

Mike

I have recently purchased a SanDisk 256MB Flash Drive in hopes of using it
to carry around some utilities and files during daily troubleshooting.

The flash drive is a SanDisk Cruzer Mini Model SDCZ2-256.

Now I knew this was USB 2.0 and most of the machines I support are
older, but I thought 2.0 supported the older USB 1.0 so there would
be no problems.

First test machine:
Old Dell Optiplex Gx1
P3 Running XP Pro SP1 with all the critical patches applied.

In the Device Manager I show a Universal Serial Bus Controllers then:

Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
USB Root Hub

When I plug in the sandisk I get an error reporting that a High
speed USB Device is plugged into a non hi speed usb hub.
I'm using the USB ports on the motheboard.

It shows up as a removable disk and if I try to double click it prompts me
to insert a disc.

I downloaded the MS update for USB 2.0, rebooted and tried again, with the
same results.

The second machine is a new off the shelf HP/Compaq desktop.
P4 running XP Pro SP1 with all critical patches applied.
I ran the USB 2.0 driver patch and rebooted the machine.

The device manager shows this for the USB items:

Intel 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host controller
3 different Intel 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host controller
4 instances of USB Root hub

Plug in the SanDisk to the back of the computer and it shows up
as a removable disk and I get the same results when I double click
on it.

Please insert a disc into the Drive

I've gone through 3 more desktops, ranging from XP to Win2K, and
an older laptop all with the same results.

Is the flash drive busted? Am I doing something wrong?

Any help is appreciated.
