USB Hard Drive loses its USB connection constantly

J

Julian Milano

When I plug in my external USB hard-drive (new WD120GB in a USB external
case), the Autoplay dialog pops up, scans the hard disk looking for content,
then asks what I want Windows to do with it.

But for some reason, this keeps happening every 20 seconds. It's like the
USB port loses its connection to the external drive and then finds it again,
and acts like the device has just been connected.

This is happening with my External USB CDRW drive, USB hub and USB external
hard disk. If I plug these devices onto my laptop, they work fine. If I'm
lucky, the external USB hard drive stays connected for 10 minutes, but will
eventually drop the connection then find it again.

My system was dinging & donging all throughout the night, until I found out
that the PC was losing and then finding its USB connection with the USB hub.

What could be wrong? Where do I look for an answer?

Do the devices work if they are plugged directly into the USB port, ie
not via the hub?

Is it a powered USB Hub?

John,

Each device is on it's own USB port. Each is connected directly to a USB
port directly off the mobo.

Have you tried another USB device in the same USB port that you use for the
hard drive? It is possible that the port is broken/defective.

Also, you can buy a powered USB hub and connect the hard drive to the hub.
It is possible that the motherboard based USB port can not provide enough
power to the USB port for the hard drive. A powered USB hub helps by
providing extra power to its USB ports.

I had the same problem with two USB2.0 external hard drives. Fortunately
the second one also had a firewire port and this is much more reliable.
