Frustration with USB 2.0 Hub on Windows XP SP1

I have an IBM Thinkpad R40 (with USB 2.0 ports they claim). I bought a
USB 2.0 hub today as I need a few extra ports for all the things i've
accumulated...(well Printer, ISDN, Mouse, Camera and I'm sick of
unplugging /plugging things in). I have XP Pro with SP1, fully up to
date with all Windows Updates, including all available drivers.

I'm getting the "HI-SPEED USB device is plugged into a non-HI-SPEED
Port" popup that many have reported. (100% of the time and nothing
works on the hub).

I have SP1 (which was one reported fix), and Device manager shows
under USB Controllers a Intel 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host
Controller - 24CD(dated 1/06/02) , but I also note 3 more lines
for 24c2, 24c4 and 24c7 with just Intel 82801DB/DBM USB Univesal
Host Controller (dated 1/7/01).

I've tried using the Windows update W2K USB update, but thats an older
driver, and seems to stop all USB working at all, and was supposed to
be the fix for adding the 'enhanced bit'. I've looked on IBM's site
to no avail for any fixes other than for W2K USB2.0 support (which is
the 'Intel driver' , which is older too, and doesnt improve any
behaviour).

any clues would be greatly appreciated...

Is USB 2.0 functionality enabled in the bios?

There is the possibility that it is not.

in device manager, uninstall all the usb ports, reboot the computer
Windows should find all the ports and set-up them up correctly

Config in BIOS is just for "USB Support " Enabled.. no specific
mention of 2.0. The R40 was claimed to be the 1st Thinkpad with 2.0
support I noticed...
I've upgraded BIOS from 1.09 to 1.20 version and behaviour is slightly
diff. Now I dont get the pop up, just a ! against the Generic USB Hub
in device mgr and nothing works on it.

I tried removing driver for it and rescanning for hw, and windows
reports the device has a error preventing it starting. On a hunch I
re-ran Windows Update scan for updates, and now 822603 - Availability
of the Windows XP SP1 USB 1.1 and 2.0 Update is in a recommended
update. I'm doing that now and will see soon if that improves things.
The desc on this KB item doesnt match my problem but who knows.. !

Thanks for your input Jason, and I'll advise if any progress...

The follow up is that after applying the Windows Update patch the Hub
still doesnt work, but it no longer give the hi-speed non-hi-speed
popup, but just the "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".
Interestingly if I click driver tab on the Generic USB Hub properties
it says Driver Date 1/7/2001 Ver 5.1.2600.0 but driver details says :
5.1.2600.1243 (xpsp2.030702-2125) , and file in use is:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\usbhub.sys 03/07/2003 05:52 PM 53,120

So I'm still stuck... after BIOS Upgrade, Windows Update, and
countless uninstall driver and scan new hardware re-installs...

Anyone got a USB2.0 Hub working on an IBM Thinkpad under XP ?

rgds .. Peter
