urlmon.dll error in IE6 SP1 on WinME

Finally decided I needed some help to resolve this issue since I've
had nothing but deadends after several days of searching newsgroups
and finding similar situations but few definitive answers.

ISSUE:
When browsing to a particular site (bcentral.com) and attempting to
use the login page (MS Passport based), the following error is
received: "Explorer has caused an error in URLMON.DLL ..." So far,
this seems to be the only website that generates this error.

SYSTEM:
Windows ME, IE 6.0, SP1 with Q822925, Q330994, and Q828750
Also Installed: Nortan AV 8.07, ZoneAlarm Firewall

The issue only seemed to begin occurring after a windows update was
run, which included the following items: Q822925 and Q330994 (along
with a whole slew of other updates).

TROUBLESHOOTING (so far):
1)Initial searching led me to verify the version and re-register the
urlmon.dll (and a list of other files, including
shdocvw.dll,oleaut32.dll, and others). No improvement of issue.
Note: version C:\Windows\sysem\urlmon.dll is 6.00.2800; version in
C:\windows\vcm\urlmon.dll is 5.55

2)Various threads mentioned that Q813489 may help with the issue.
After downloading, the hotfix fails to install and generates a message
saying that IE 6 SP1 is required to install. IE 6 SP1 is listed as
the version in IE >> Help >> About, and in Add/Remove Programs. I've
also noticed that there are a lot of comments about this hotfix
creating additional issues, so I haven't been all that interested in
attempting to re-install especially after the cumulative patch became
avaiable today.

3)Ran Repair Install for IE. Seemed to work once -- was able to
successfully access the trouble site and login without receiving
error. After subsequent logins, error returned and we're back at
square one.

Q813489/April-03 CumPatch for IE is included in Q822925/Aug-03 CumPatch for
IE, Rowland. As you have Q822925 installed, that's what the error is
telling you.

Q822925 has been replaced Friday by Q828750,
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=828750. Keep up-to-date with such
patches via Windows Update instead of picking and choosing ones you think
you need. This CumPatch includes Urlmon.dll version 6.0.2800.1259, which
might just fix your problem. For a successful and clean install, disable
your anti-virus application and close all other running processes before
going to Windows Update and when downloading/installing from any MS page.

If the new version doesn't help, see

Iexplore Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module Urlmon.dll
(assuming Iexplore was mentioned, not Explorer, but...)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=309476

There might be a coding problem on the bcentral.com page, too.

PA Bear,

Thank you for the quick reply. Thanks for clarifying the issue with
the cumulative patches...I didn't take the time to look that up which
would have saved me a headache or two. The latest cum patch Q828750
was installed just prior to posting this thread and it has not
resolved the issue at this time. I have disabled Norton/ZoneAlarm
during the install from Windows update as SOP.

The issue really is caused by Explorer instead of IExplore in the
error message. I've seen the HP/Win98 article, but it doesn't seem to
apply in this case. We do have a lexmark printer on the system (which
also seems to be a common config for this issue). Right now, I'm
leaning towards the "badly coded page" theory due to lack of
additional things to try.

If you have any other thoughts, please let me know.

Are you now running Urlmon.dll version 6.0.2800.1259? Have you tried
re-registering Urlmon.dll?...

Start>Run>Regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

Did you ever have an HP product installed on the machine and do you find HP
Instant Deliver in Add/Remove Programs?

IIRC a recent NAV update was giving some users problems. Check with
Symantec Help and Support.
