uploading to a new web host

Guest

Hi all,

I've been using FP 03 for a few year w/o any difficulties, then my hosting
co. raised their rates almost 100% so I switched to a different hosting
company and now I can't upload my site. It all starts fine and says there's
about 5-6 hours left them about 30 minutes into it I get an error message
that says the server unexpectedly timed out. I cantacted the host (IX
webhosting) and they say nothing is timing out on their end (they are the 2nd
co. to say this). I also tried using Smart FTP and it seems to upload the
body of the site but not the photos. Tech support from IX said it was
something to do with the vti_cnf being a "subfolder" and the path is not
correct. Please forgive my ignorance as I'm not a techy at this stuff.

Thanks,
Greg

Use of FTP has corrupted your FP SE
- have you host repair them

Thanks for the info Stefan. I did this and the SE are said to be working
fine. I start the upload and get the bar across the bottom showing the
progress and speed (26k seems awful slow to me considering I'm using a cable
connection). I get about 20 minutes into it and then it stops and I get an
error message that says "The server unexpectedly closed the connection" and
everything stops.

If you have any file sizes over 1 MB that may be causing it

That does sound logical and I do have some files that contain several pics
that total more than 1MB. Any way around this?

Thanks again.

Your web host would have to increase the maximum file size upload default from 1 MB.

That makes sense as well and I will contact them to see what can be done.
However, some of the larger files do upload and then all of a sudden
everything stops and I get the error message that the server closed the
connection.

This is still a host issue or a limitation of your internet connection provider on how many bytes
you can transfer outbound during a session.

I agree but neither are taking responsibility so I think I may just forget
about having a website.

I realized that I may be experience very minor laps in my web connection as I
am on a wireless network. So I copy the whole website to an external
hard-drive and install it onto a hardwired computer and 10 hours later the
website uploads great save a few links and pictures. Lesson learned. Please
feel free to use my ignorance to help others and thanks for all your help.
