upgrading problems

I am trying to upgrade from win 98 to xp pro in my
computer lab. THe machines were all purchased at the same
time and have been updated to 512 Ram.

Out of the 7 machines that I have tried so far only three
have been successful.

The other 4 seem to work fine and then about 30 minutes
after starting when it is in the middle of the xp install
I get a message that windows setup could not finish due to
an I/O error.

Does that mean my CD Rom is the problem?
 
If you think the CD ROM drive is bad then swap it out with one from the
machines that were successful.
