upgrading NT Server to 2000 Advanced Server

I have been able to complete setup for this server.
However, I can not get it to recognize the domain it
belongs to. I can only log on locally not through the
network. I cannot install DC Promo to promote it to a
DC. I have not lost any data. How can I get this machine
to communicate on the network. It is seen by other
computers on the network but won't connect. I also cannot
change the name to a new account name prepared for it on
the DC of the network. Please any help would be greatly
appreciated.

I assume you are upgrading a NT 4.0 domain?

What did you do to get to this point?
