Upgrading from ME to XP

Hello

I attempted to upgrade my desktop OS from the current ME to XP
I used a Windows XP professional CD setup
The XP setup "hangs" during the "registering components" phase of the XP setup

Every attempt to interrupt and reboot my system results in the XP setup being re-started

I can not exit out of the XP setup but as the setup continues, it always "hangs up" at the same place....."registering components"..

If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it

Thanks.

Once computer starts,install xp cd,restart computer,boot to xp cd(might need t
adjust in BIOS),then at info screen select, install xp,new copy, delete partition wit
OS (ME),this way xp deletes ME,formts the hd,and installs xp.XP doesnt need or us
ME,the upgrade isnt practical from ME to XP,a clean install of XP works better.

When the system starts up, see if you can press F8 and get a menu of operating systems to pick from (I think it's F8). You may be lucky, and see your previous operating system listed there (just hazarding a guess). If so, see if you can boot your old OS and get your data off so you can wipe the disk clean and install from scratch. My guess, is that if you've had that system running ME for a while, there might be something in your ME installation that XP setup didn't like. If all of the hardware inside your computer has an XP driver out there for it, then you should be able to get away with wiping the system clean and performing a fresh installation

Hope this helps..

- Steven

Thanks!

I'll give it a try.

Thanks but once I reboot, the computer automatically
continues with the aborted XP setup and then eventually
hangs up at the same exact place and locks the screen.

I'll try Steven's suggestion below....

Thanks.

Hi Steven,

F8 did interupt the XP setup. But the only choices of OS
I now get is XP Professional only. No ME.
I tried:

1. Starting Windows Normally, but I get the same thing,
XP setup continues

2. Last known working configuration, but again only XP
professional is available and once I select that, same
problem.

There are other modes like:

SAFEMODE
SAFEMODE with NETWORKING
SAFEMODE with COMMAND PROMPT
ENABLE BOOT LOGGING
ENABLE VGA MODE
DIRECTORY SERVICES RESTORE MODE
DEBUGGING MODE
REBOOT

Any other suggestions?

Thanks again.

Sorry that F8 didn't bring you the results that you were looking for

If you have a high-speed connection to the internet, you may want to try going downloading a copy of Knoppix to rescue your data from your failed XP installation. Knoppix is a version of Linux that runs contained on a CD-R and in your system's RAM. You should be able to boot the system with this Knoppix CD-R and backup your data to a burner in the system (as long as that drive is not the same drive you used to boot Knoppix) or copy your data off to another PC on your network. I work in an exclusively-Windows shop, but Knoppix has saved my butt a few times and has been very convenient for data recovery situations from laptops and desktop systems

Hope this gets your data back for you..
