Upgraded from XP Home to XP Pro and lost modem use

Upon upgrading from Home to Pro and downloading and installing All SP's and
Updates I have lost the use of my internal modem. It is yellow flagged in
the Device Manager, and properties shows that no drivers are installed. I
try to reinstall the drivers and eventually get the message that The modem
could not be installed because "THE SPECIFIED SERVICE DOES NOT EXIST AS IN
INSTALLED SERVICE" To eliminate any hardware problem, I then connected up a
known good external modem to Com1. Windows found the modem, properly
identified it, but I ended up with the same results as on the internal
modem.

I have checked my Services in the Management Console, and the Telephony
Service is running. I don't know of any other services that could affect
the modem.

In the event log I get the warning message that the SNMP Service is ignoring
extension agent key SOFTWARE\Microsoft\IPXMibAgent\CurrentVersion because it
is missing or misconfigured.
Could this have anything to do with my problem?

Norton WinDoctor shows that Cmmgr32.exe is missing and has deleted several
registry entries that reference it. Could this be a clue?

This is not an immediate problem, as I use DSL, but I do like to have a
backup, and I do send an occasional FAX.

Any Help would be appreciated. How do I get my Modem Back?

Hmm... Start > Run > type "services.msc" (without the quotes) and do you
have "Remote Access Connection Manager" set to manual and NOT to disabled?

Services shows that Remote Access Connection Manager is set to manual and it
is running. Thanks for your reply. Do you have any other suggestions?

I solved this problem by reinstalling XP Pro over the existing installation.
It worked!

Thanks for the response, after reinstalling over the old installation you'll
need to do your updates again. Don't know how it happened that you managed
to get into such a predicament as it is.
