Upgraded from Win98 & can't get web pages to load

I just upgraded from Win98 to Windows 2000. I use bellsouth.net as my
ISP. The newly installed Win 2000 found my modem and now allows me to
connect to the internet via bellsouth.net. However, when I load
internet explorer (5) I can't get any web pages to load up. I have
made the recommended changes like "find my DNS automatically" as per
bellsouth's instructions but still am having no luck.

My rig:
AMD 1.1Ghz
192 MB Ram
External US Robotics 56k modem

Should I upgrade to IE6?
Can I download the full IE6 and put it on a cd since I can't connect
at home?
How do I do this?

I downloaded modem drivers but they're probably the same ones I
already have.

Should I do a clean install of Win 2000 and blow away everything that
98 left behind? This is a pain but if its my only recourse I guess I
have no other choice.

Your comments and suggestions are appreciated.

Have you tried downloading the patches from microsoft?
Would recommend upgrading to IE 6 and if the problem
persistes then those patches normally fix it.

Just an idea, use it, don't use it...

Are you running a firewall? If so, check your configuration.
You can try pinging aweb site by name and see if you are truly accessing
the net. Also get the DNS IP from your provider and use it.

Hope this helps,
Greg

Thanks for all your advice. I appreciate it. I ended up doing a
clean install and that took care of all the networking problems. I
also installed SP4 before I installed anything else and it also
helped.

When in doubt, do a fresh install. Do not "upgrade" to Win2000.
