Upgrade from XP Home to Pro crashed

I tried to upgrade my PC from OEM XP Home to Pro with an authentic CD but the
installation stalled giving an error message. The only way out was to hit the
reset switch which results in a "re-installing windows" then "insert CD into
the d drive" message but when I do this it doesn't proceed. When I try to
reboot in safe mode the only option given is to use XP Pro ( ie XP Home is
missing) which takes me back to the above message and around and around it
goes. I've also tried 'last known good configuration' without success. Do I
have to format the hard drive and try re- installing XP Pro?? What else can I
try?
Thanks

Actually thier is no upgrade from home to pro.The upgrade is suppose to be
from past windows OS.To install pro, from home, one needs to boot to xp cd,
(set BIOS to do this),then at info page select, install xp,new copy, delete the
partition(xp home),create one, then xp will reformat and install auto.

Please supply a list of books, websites, forums from which you get your
information.. I feel like sending letters out to all of them..

The advice you give to people is often inappropriate or just plain wrong..
we all make mistakes sometimes, and just being human makes us fallible, but
you take it to new heights..

What error message are you getting?.. does it relate to the version
presently installed being newer than the version you are trying to install?

Mike,

I AM having exactly the error you allude to, re: the version presently
installed (XP Home w/ SP2) being newer than the version I'm trying to
'upgrade' to (XP Pro, prob at SP1). Can you take me from there, and suggest
what might be going on? I've enjoyed XP Home all I can stand, but I have a
whole lot of applications that I just don't feel like re-installing by doing
a 'cold' install of XP Pro. Help ?

Thanks in advance,
PatKav

You do have options..

#1.. If your system was not installed with a version of XP SP2, that is to
say, you installed SP2 after XP, as long as you kept the files to uninstall
it, you could actually uninstall SP2, upgrade your system to Pro, and then
re-install SP2.. this way could work flawlessly, then again, it may not..

#2.. You can create a slipstreamed XP Pro SP2 CD, and upgrade using the
newly created CD.. how to create such a CD?.. its here.. you may need to
read it more than once..

#3.. Purchase an XP Pro SP2 version..

But there is one statement in your post that gives rise to a question on my
part.. You say that "I've enjoyed XP Home all I can stand".. what are you
hoping to gain by upgrading to the Pro version?. take a look at this
website.. it details the difference between Home and Pro versions.. you may
find that you do not need any of the Pro features at all..

Post back to let me know how you are getting along with your 'project'..

You should be aware that there is zero difference in performance or
stability between XP Home and XP Pro. The two versions are compiled
from the same source code base.

The differences between the two consist of certain specific features
or functions which are included in XP Pro and which are not available
in XP Home. So unless you have a current or anticipated future need
for at least one of the features or functions that are unique to XP
Pro then you are not going to get any benefit from doing the upgrade.

Good luck
