upgrade from outlook xp to 2003

I have just upgraded my office version from xp to 2003 with a strange
result.

The outlook xp settings were transferred just fine with all mail
folders and account settings, but i am now unable to send or receive
on the pop3 email account. manually entering or transferring settings
from a wellworking outlook express installation on the same machine
does not do me any good. smtp and pop servers are exactly the same,
and it worked just fine in outlook xp minutes ago!

I keep gettin' the annoying messages:
--------------------------------------------
Task 'xxxx - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC0D) : 'Unable to find
the e-mail server. Please verify the server information in your
account properties.'

Task 'xxxx - Receiving' reported error (0x80040900) : 'The server name
you entered can not be found on the network (it might be down
temporarily). Please verify that you are online and that the server
name is correct.'

just some extra strange info -.-

Testing the mail account from control panel | mail reveal absolutely
no error. Even the "Send test message" bullet succeedes.

But exactly the same account tested from inside outlook 2003 is
completely unable to locate the pop & smtp servers... Very strange
indeed. Semms like some kind of firewall is blocking outlook 2003 from
accessing the internet...
