Upgrade from 98 (not 98SE) hangs up

I have tried multiple times to upgrade my Compaq Presario
1920 from Windows 98 (NOT SE)to XP Home, and am still
unsuccessful:
- the internal CD/DVD drive spins more slowly and
eratically, although any other CD is read with no problem
- It does get to the "What do you want to do?" screen,
which I answer "install", after which it hangs up, giving
the following message:
- The file E:I386 (0r is that 1386???)\WINNT32A.DLL could
not be loaded or is corrupt. Setup cannot continue
- I did clean the XP CD and tried other CDs to confirm
the drive was not acting up
- I did disconnect every external device, to no avail
- NOTE: the original hard drive crashed about a month
ago, so a new HD was installed, with the Win98 system
Thanks

Your old Compaq Presario 1920 hardware may not be compatible
with Windows XP.

Windows XP Upgrade Advisor
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307726

The following guidelines are provided to HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario
Notebook customers who are considering whether to upgrade an existing
Notebook PC to Microsoft Windows XP. The purpose of this document is
to help minimize frustration and surprises if the decision is made to upgrade
to Windows XP. Anyone considering this upgrade should do so carefully.
Although many Notebook PCs may meet the minimum requirements recommended
by Microsoft for upgrade to Windows XP, upgrading is not recommended for all PCs,
especially where the base platform has not been tested and qualified by HP for use
with Windows XP.

I am having the same issue trying to install XP Pro on an IBM A21m laptop. I
have been able to upgrade other A21m's with no issues - laptop meets all
hardware specs. Am using VL disk.

When I try booting from the CD to do the install the laptop hangs. (tested
booting from Win98 disk and saw no issue). Was able to boot another laptop
from the XP disk so disk is not the issue When booting computer normally to
Win98SE computer boots with no issue. When I try installing from within W98 I
get a different errors.

winnt32a.dll could not be loaded or file is corrupt.

also: WINNT32 cause an exception c0000006H in module Kernel32.dll

these usually show up as soon as I start the upgrade - at one point I was
able to get to the point where I entered the VLK and then it errored out
saying could not set up a text file (forgot to right down specifics on that
one)

no AV is running
tried booting to safe mode to do install - no go same issues
checked for spyware nothing found - ran full virus scan as well before
attemtping upgrade
ran scandisk and defrag

any other thoughts?

thanks,

dan
