is it necessary to update every little thing from
microsoft updates? my virus scanner is up to date and i

I've read over those topics, yet im still not sure, with
the latest protection, what the benefits are, especially
with the long downloads on dial up. other than a few
compatabillity patches.

Install Critical Updates and Service Packs only.
The rest is optional.

Proper protection of your computer has at least 3 points
1. Firewall
2. Windows Update
3. Antivirus
4. Spyware protection

Leaving off one of the top 3 leaves your computer vulnerable.
No combination of two can effectively replace the 3rd.
