Updating from MS Windows update site

My laptop computer will not upgrade from the windows
update site. Its connected through the internet through
a hub using my desktops internet connection (could this
be the problem) It just sits there with the download
dialog not moving, not even started. Task manager says
its still running. Can anyone tell me whats wrong with
it. I tried the updage newsgroup but its dead there, i
believe when i went back there i saw a tumbleweeb make
its way across
