I have for some reason not been getting regular prompts
re Windows updates, subsequently I find that I have a
considerable backlog which would take approx. 7 hours to
download.
How can I select downloads that I choose and when I
choose to download?

Stuart;
Right click My Computer, click Properties.
Click Automatic Updates tab.
Uncheck "Keep my computer up to date..."
Click OK and follow prompts.
Then Start/All Programs/Windows Update.

First select Service Pack by itself if available.
Install it and reboot.

Then start on others, no more than 4 at a time.
Reboot between each set.

Turn Automatic Update back on if desired.
Otherwise go to Windows Update periodically and get the updates.
