update error - make sure cryptographic service is running ?!!!

Hi.
i am getting an error trying to run windows update on a friends pc -

"Setup could not verify the integrity of the file update.inf make sure the
cryptographic service is running on this computer"

would be very grateful if someone could tell me what to do next !!!

I re-named the catroot folder to catroot2 and it worked for me, but I am not
sure about your case....I don't want to give bad advice, this is just what I
done to resolve my problem with the update
To do that, right click start, explore, expand windows folder, look for
system32, expand that folder and look for the catroot folder and re-name it.

BRILLIANT - I SHOULD HAVE LOOKED BELOW FIRST !!
renamed the catroot2 folder restarted and now its updating like billyo
