Update Error - 0x80070643

I have a user that has changed his default location for My Documents to E:\My
Documents. His E drive is a partition of his hard drive.

He has installed Defender (1347) and is getting this error when he tries to
download new definitions. I have read some things on it and have tried a
bunch of solutions with no results.

- We have tried KB915105 - this did nothing for our error.
- I read about a guy who had changed his default location to a network drive
(M drive) and he went thru his registry changing out M:\ for C:\. Don't
know if he did it for every application or only Microsoft's applications but
from what we have tried, this is not working either.
- If i get updates directly from update.microsoft.com, defender signitures
are not listed.

This is the error from the application event log:
Source: MsiInstaller
Category: None
EventID: 11606
Description: Product: Windows Defender Signatures -- Error 1606. Could not
access network location %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My Picutres\.

Also - why the heck is defender trying to access that location for
signatures??

Has anyone else run into this and figured out a way around it?

We have a WSUS and I manage it. Access to updates is not restricted however
automatic updates are turned off. All the defender updates (up-to-date) have
been approved for installation. This is the only computer (of 80'ish) that
is having update issues. I still believe it has to do with him changing his
default location for My Documents.

With the new version - I believe that you can manually download from
microsoft update a new signiture - i have done that on other machines.

Anyway - I found a posting somewhere (and of course I can't seem to find it
back) that had a link to a signiture file that you downloaded and then
launched. This took care of his update issue - this time. We'll see how it
goes when a new update is released from Microsoft.

That would be the link I've been looking for. It downloads the exe and
allows you to update defender without going to the update site.

Thank you very much!!

It's a little late, but I'll add another suggestion for this problem.

I had the same error, and as I had also redirected My Documents I wasted a lot of time on the suggestions in KB886549 but with no success in getting Windows Defender to update.

However, today I found a post (somewhere) for an MSI "Error 1606" for some other app, which suggested the error could be caused by a problem with the "User Shell Folder" values for HKU\.Default (rather than for HKCU or HKLM).

Sure enough, on my system the "My Pictures" value in
HKU\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
was of type REG_SZ instead of REG_EXPAND_SZ. Who knows how this came to be -- perhaps because my system was originally an upgrade from Win98SE?

Something others may want to check...
