Unsupported Operating System error when loading Media player 11

While finishing up the download of Media player 11, after validation, the
error message says the following:

Windows media player 11
Set up can not continue
Unsupported operating system
Please visit windows update to download the update rollup 2 for windows xp
medial center edition 2005 before installing windows media player 11

I can't get to download this- what am I doing wrong?

Install Service Pack 3 for Windows XP.

Download and install the standalone version of SP3.

I downloaded the service pack 3 as instructed, then downloaded window media
11. Yet still get the failure to install / unsupported operating system
message after windows verification process. References mandate to install
windows update rollup 2 (KB899589) which does not install.
