On your sign-in screen, where it says you have ?? unread
messages, where is that coming from? Messenger? If so,
then if you have read all of the messages, how do you
reset this flag? Thanks in advance.

Hi

Download TweakUI from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp and when installed go to Start>Programs>Powertoys for Windows XP>Tweak UI - then Logon>Unread Mail - uncheck 'Show unread mail on Welcome screen' or via the Registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\(Your E-Mail Address) - in the right hand pane double click 'Message Count' and set the value to 0(zero)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail - in the right hand pane double click 'MessageExpiryDays' and set the value to 0(zero)

Note: **If you do intend to manually edit the Registry, please back it up first.** A very good program to backup/restore the Registry is ERunt:

Compliments of Kelly:

Use TweakUI/Logon/Unread Mail and Repair/Unread Mail Count
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Disable Unread Mail on the Welcome Screen (Line 100)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To remove an account or to change the count manually Got to:
Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Your
E-Mail Address]. In the right pane modify: Message Count, Change it to 0.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail. In
the right pane modify: MessageExpiryDays Change it to 0.

Its a check made of some mail services - where a note of messages
available and of how many have been read gets kept around. It is not
very reliable. To correct or get rid of it, Use TweakUI - one of the XP
Powertoys from (if you have installed XP SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its Logon - Unread Mail has a box to turn it off; its Repair - Repair
Unread Mail Count clears it
