unread designation disappeared

I had many emails marked unread. Somehow they suddenly were all marked
read. What could I have done to cause this? Is there a way to restore the
unread designation? I restored the system to a time before this happened but
it did not change the unread status.

In the message list pane you can select all the emails you want changed
to 'unread' status, then right-click on any selected one and choose
"Mark as Unread".

I don't know what could have caused the 'read' status to change by itself.
