unmountable_boot_volume

Last night I shut down my PC without going through the
normal shut down process. This morning when I attmepted to
turn the PC on, I got a screen that said Windows did not
start successfully. It gave five options on how to start
my PC (three safe mode options, one last known
configuration, and start windows normally). No matter what
option I choose, I get a blue screen that says
unmountable_boot_volume. Technical information ***STOP:
0X000000ED (0X80E94E30, 0XC0000032,0X00000000,0X00000000).
The blue screen also prompts me to disable or remove newly
installed hardware or software. It also instructs me to
disable BIOS and restart my computer and select safe mode,
but when I select safe mode I get the blue screen again.

Make sure you have your Windows XP Reinstall CD available.
Pop the CD in and turn on the PC. As soon as the power
comes on immediately tap F12. This should bring up a blue
screen with your CD Drive as one of the options. Highlight
your CD Drive and hit enter. This will bring up a black
screen asking if you want to run the CD click enter
immediately (it will only ask you a few seconds and then
go back to the option that lead you to blue screen.) When
the Reinstall CD Runs and you are prompted for choices at
the menu...click R for repair. That should give you a
prompt. Type chkdsk /r then press enter. Wait until the
reapir 5 gets to 100%. It will take a while. Once it gets
to 100% remove the CD and restart the PC. Everything
should be back to normal after that.
