UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME on install - Stop: 0x0000000ED (0x81f718c8, 0xc0000141f, 0x00000000, 0x00000

Si.

This has been bugging me for ages! When I install XP Prof. I get the
following message:

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Stop: 0x0000000ED (0x81f718c8, 0xc0000141f, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I found a read the link on the Microsoft website
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;297185&Product=winxp
which did not help.

I have since
* Removed LAN and Sound card from the system
* Disconnect "Spare"/Backup hard drive
* Replaced the cable from the mother board to the hard drive

The hard drive has been formatted and a full scan disk ran, without any
errors.

I loaded default BIOS settings.

The system was then booted up on the 6 Win XP install disks.

I can't run a repair install, as it currently has ME on it (which crashes so
often - even on a clean install!!!)

Anyone know where I can go next to get XP to install?

Si.

N.B. the hard drive is a 5Gb 'slow' drive - but it works OK on ME - and I
don't really want to replace it - as it suits my needs!
Pentium III 667Mhz processor
approx. 320Mb RAM (can't remember how much exactly!)

What do you mean "slow' drive"?
Is the IDE cable 40 or 80 wire?
Try 80 wire as the article suggests.

You may have a problem with the IDE controller.
Connect the hard drive to the secondary controller instead of the
first and try a Clean Installation of Windows XP:

So long as ME or another windows version exist, install xp cd,re-start
computer, boot to xp cd,select, install xp,install new copy.XP will do the
rest, the only drawback to this is that the hd will be reformatted deleting
ME (if you call that a drawback).
