My dell dimension 8400 has XP pro
Windows is not starting, error msg with "unmountable_boot_volume"

Safe mode partially loads and then stops; (stops at line agpcpq.sys) and
same error msg.

tried restarting with OS CD, at recovery mode systems stops at first line
"examining 152587 MB disk 0 at ID 0 on bus 0 on IASTOR ... " . the computer
goes quite and appears the system will not read hard drive.

tried installing XP from OS CD as new, same issue.

any suggstions??
is my hard drive toast??

You can run the hard drive manufacturers test utility but it sounds like
you
need a new hard drive. You may be able to access and recover the data on
the
dive by placing the drive in an external cradle and connecting to a
working
computer.

Open the machine and find out the brand/model of the hard disk. Now download
and run the diagnostic tool that the disk manufacturer has on his home site.

Ran a HD diagnostic, two failures on the hard drive test
1) "Read Test" failed with error code 0F00:0244, msg: block 154461597
2) "Verify Test" failed with error code 0F00:1A44, msg: block 154461597

looks like one sector may be bad.
is it possible to isolate that sector and start Win?

The HD is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7, 160 GB, model # St3160023AS

I don't think so - if it was possible then the diagnostic program would have
told you. You can fence it off like so:
- Determine the total number of clusters.
- Calculate the percentage location of the bad cluster.
- Using a partition manager, split your disk so that the bad cluster lies
within the a dedicated "bad" partition. This will involve some quesswork.

If this was my machine then I would replace the disk.

Have you tried installing the drive in another computer as a second
slave drive. That would enable you to recover any data files. You could
then run chkdsk and try to effect a repair. Given the file located at
the bad sector it may not still not allow the system to boot when
reinstalled in the original computer but it may allow you to reinstall.
However, the whole thing depends on the extent of the bad sectors and
whether further bad sectors will subsequently appear. It may be simpler
to recover the data and buy a new hard drive for the computer.
