unmountable boot volume

I can't get windows xp to boot up. I was told to
download a file to fix this onto 6 floppy disks and boot
this way and at the prompt type chkdsk /r. I tried this
and it does not work. I get a message saying that it can
not find the file autochck.exe. I have contacted compaq
about this and they say they can send me a cd to fix this
but it will take 30 days. Any help would be appreicated.

Victor;
You may need to wait for the CD, but try everything that you have not
already tried:
Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
Laptop:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and
download their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without there overlay
software which is not needed anyway.
