Unmountable boot volume error

When i start up my pc it goes to a blue screen that reads
unmountable boot volume. So i called the help line and
they told me to download the windows xp boot disks from
the windows web site but when i try to do that i get an
error saying i need a bigger disk cause it won't fit on
the one i am using but it is a brand new disk with nothing
on it. So i am up for suggestions on how to solve either
of these two problems.

Download directly to the Desktop.
Then insert a blank floppy.
Double-click the downloaded icon and follow the prompts.
You will be prompted when to insert each floppy.

Follow this for Unmountable Boot Volume message:
Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
Laptop:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and
download their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without there overlay
software which is not needed anyway.
