Unknown device...Video Camera

My Windows XP machine does not recognize my Sony trv Digital 8 camera.
Unfortunately, I plugged the camera into the USB before installing the driver.

Now it will not pick up the correct driver. I try to uninstall the unknown
device but it does not help. I try to update the driver but I get a message
that the specificed location does not contain information about your
hardware. I am selected the Sony USB .inf file but nothing.

It seems to me if I could update the driver it would be OK. Any ideas?

I had the same problem with an external hd. Installed the hardware
before I installed the software. Like you, no recognition.

The way I got the problem untangled was to completely disconnect the hd
from the USB port, re-start the computer with the software CD for the
hard drive in the reader, get the software installed and then hook up
the hd.

Might be a different technique required for cameras, but that's what
worked for me with a hard drive...

I tried that along with a series of uninstalls of the driver. I still cannot
get it to work.

Is there anything in the registry that I can remove?

Uninstall the driver in Device Manager

Disconnect the camera

Reboot

Install the the drivers

Connect the camera.

This is the usual way to correct this. However, if you keep the camera
connected, you will not be able to update the drivers.

Does the device show in device manager? Unplug the camera from the USP
port. Right click My Computer | Properties | Hardware | Device Manager.
Click on View | Show Hidden Devices. Look for the USB device with a
yellow ?. Right click on that and choose uninstall. Reboot the system.
Then install the software first according to the manufacturer's
directions.

Thanks for all of the posts. I was not successful with uninstalling via
device manager.

Ultimately, I used the system reststore feature. This go around I installed
the Sony driver and all is well.
