Uninstalling

I have Windows XP Home edition installed and lately I have been unable to
uninstall any programmes that are on the PC. In the Add and Remove
Programmes section a lot of the programmes installed are not listed. Can
anyone give help please.
If this is posted in the wrong place I apologise.

Before doing anything...

What kind of software did you install?
Was this software in the software list (Add and Remove Software configuration) before this happend?
Did you uninstall a program/ software, that maybe caused this problem?

But be carefull make backups of all your data and ask someone else (with enough computer knowledge) before...

Boot into Safe Mode, log-in as Administrator and try again.

I have tried this suggestion twice but the problem is still there. There
are a large number of assumed programmes that are listed but I do not have
the option to uninstall them and most Programmes that I know are installed
but they do arew not listed.
