days.
When I try to update, I get error message ;

The wrong diskette is in the drive insert %2 (volume serial number %3) into
drive %1.

Version 1.1.1051.0

Any advice will be much appreciated

On 21 March 2006, Windows Defender (Beta 2) halted all signature updating,
both through Defender and through Windows Update.

The high priority update "Definition Update 1.14.1350.3 for Windows Defender
(KB915597)" does download, and it does attempt to install, and the
installation appears to finish, but it never takes effect.

Within Windows Defender, the exclamation point reappears on the applicatoin
icon, and the application continues to display this warning: "Windows
Defender definitions haven't been updatd in 56 days."

Within Windows Update, after Expressing all critical updates, the dialog
ends with "You have successfully updated your computer," but in Windows
Defender, the About dialog continues to show: "Windows Defender Version:
1.1.1051.0; Engine Version: 1.1.1185.0; Signature Version: 1.0.0.0."

There's no way to tell to what extent I'm protected, if at all.

Use the resolution steps in this KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105

followed by a visit to Windows Update--express scan, apply all offered
updates.

If the resolution steps in the KB result in an error message, there's a
further thing to do:

Download the Windows Installer Cleanup utility:

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;290301

install it, then run it via the start, all programs, menu.

In the list, find and select Windows Defender signatures, and click remove.

Then proceed with the visit to Windows Update--as above.

I have tried all of the steps mentioned above and still no update. Anything
else to try?

There are some users who've said that uninstalling and reinstalling,
followed by a reboot, has helped--even after taking all of those steps.

It does not work because there are pre-requisite files which Windows Update
(and Automatic Updates) need to function correctly :) Once you have the pre
requisite files, then you should be able to receive updates from AU.

When you visit Windows Update, I assume there is nothing listed anymore. If
it is still not working can you tell us about the network? Is it a corporate
network where they may be blocking access through a proxy?

Yes, that is exactly the case. I did the first step, it failed, then I ran
the Clean Up program, and removed the Windows Defender Signiture. Now,
Windows Update shows nothing to update. Home network, no proxy.

I attempted to take your advice (I also get the wrong diskette insertion
error) about windows defender being unable to update and that didnt work.
The only critical update I have it for windows defender, and it keeps on
failing to update, any advice?thanks!

Can I assume that you have no updates that you've set to hidden? I believe
you are told about this quite forcefully whenever you run WU, so this is
probably true--i.e. you haven't hidden any. There's a "restore hidden
updates" in the left column, which is grayed out if none are hidden.

I've had a couple of responses which are strange--they've indicated that
installing a "root certificates update" (which is NOT a critical update)
somehow seemed to free up definition updates. I'm quite skeptical about
this, but that's a small update, and worth putting in anyway, I think.

What version of Windows is this on?

You are correct, the non critical updates like root certificate need to be
installed. Thanks!

David--this is strange. I'd like to be able to pass along your
WindowsUpdate.log file to Steve Dodson, if possible?

If you are able to do this, it would be helpful to use notepad as follows:

1) Start, run, notepad %windir%\windowsupdate.log (and hit enter)

Scroll down to perhaps a week before today's date, and delete all of the
Older stuff--i.e. highlight everything down to a week ago and delete it.

Save the result to a new file--you choose the name, suffix ".txt"

Put the file where you can find it easily--maybe the desktop or my
documents.

Then right-click an empty space in that folder and create a zip (compressed)
folder. Use the same name you used for the text file. Drag and drop the
text file into the zip folder, and mail that file to:

stevedod @ microsoft.com

(remove spaces in the above address)

(for lurkers--I am looking for windowsupdate.log file specifically from
users who appear to have found that adding optional updates--specifically
the "root certificates" update--has been necessary for Windows Defender to
update properly.--please don't send such logs to Steve unless you have had
that precise experience.)

If you are able to do this, it would be helpful--if you'd like to, but are
having trouble following my (probably muddled) instructions, let me know,
and I'm sure I can clarify!

Hi Sophie;

If I'm correct in interpreting that your getting the error 0x8024022, the
newsgroup would need to know what operating system you're running, Windows
2000 perhaps? If it's Win2K the solution for defender update failures is
to install an Optional update "the root certificates update" which won't
come down to you through an Express update, only through a Custom update,
and then looking under the optional updates:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924123

Let us know if you're not on Win2K.
