Dell dimesion 8200 desktop was very slow at starup. removed some startup
items in system configuration utility. after reboot got message RUNDLL
specified module could not be found. i restored deleted items in system
configuration utility, but still got same message. computer starts up with
lot more icons in tray and programs opening automatically that did not
previously.

i tried to system restore using automatic checkpoints for various dates.
each time computer rebooted, but got message that restoration was incomplete
and computer could not be restored to specified date and checkpoint.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

try windows in the other
modes and see if there is
an improvement.

also, system restore can
also be initiated in safemode.

however, if windows does
work better in safemode, then
skip the restore and begin the
process of searching the faulty
issue afflicting windows in normal
mode. usually antivirals are
the issue.

try booting into safemode
and test driving windows
for a while.

safely ignored. It has no effect on your system.

This error is worth investigating. However, you will need to search the
Registry to find out what programme is not registering. Select Start,
Run, type "regedit" without quotes and hit ENTER. Place the cursor on My
Computer, select Edit, Find and search for
"B286F068-5B17-4AE8-989B-8F9A199C47BA". You should be able to get a
programme name. I have tried a Google search but I am not getting a
result.

This is a symptom and not the underlying problem.

How much RAM memory do you hasve?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it
is more informative.

Events occuring before today are not worth investigating.

Registry info:
ab(deafault) REG_SZ DMC Component
AccessPermission REG_Binary (the list of numbers was too long to fit on
my screen & a I could not copy them)
AuthenticationLevel REG_DWORD 0X00000001(1)
DllSurrogate REG-SZ
LaunchPermission REG_BINARY (another long list of numbers)

RAM (I doubled my RAM in November to 1.0)
Total 473436
Limit 1733684
Peak 1028076

Did you want me to dfrag or to send you information? I checked a few months
ago and it did not need it.

I will download the cleanup service later.

I appreciate all the help you're giving me.

Trying to make sense of your information from the Registry is
problematic. When yopu search and get a result you need to do Find next
after each result until you get an Application Name. The only meaningful
words are "DMC Component" which might referring to a Digital Mapping
Camera, Data Management Component System etc etc.

Do you or did you have an HP Printer? Do you have this driver??
hpcdmc32.dll

Your memory peak is large. You should be able to gather more information
from Task Manager. With the Processes tab open select View, Select,
Columns and check the boxes before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory
size. What are the figures for the 6 processes using the largest
amounts?

I need the Report from Disk Defragmenter before you run Disk
Defragmenter.

It is likely that an allocation of 12% has been made to System Restore
on your C partition which is over generous. I would reduce it to 700
mb. Right click your My Computer icon on the Desktop and select System
Restore. Place the cursor on your C drive select Settings but this
time find the slider and drag it to the left until it reads 700 mb and
exit. When you get to the Settings screen click on Apply and OK and
exit.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to

select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,

You still have not answered this question.

Your memory peak is large. You should be able to gather more information
from Task Manager. With the Processes tab open select View, Select,
Columns and check the boxes before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory
size. What are the figures for the 6 processes using the largest
amounts? You need to name the processes and supply the corresponding
figures

Originally you had two problems. A slow start up and an inability to use
System Restore to go back to an earlier point in time. It seems to me
that Norton Anti-Virus 2007 could be responsible for both problems.

Norton requires lots of resources in terms of memory and CPU capacity to
run effectively. Many users have dumped it for this reason. When you
boot your computer most anti-virus programmes automatically scan. Check
your Norton to see when it is scheduled to automatically scan. If it
only scans automatically on a daily basis then change the timing to a
more convenient time. Also you can test the impact of an automatic scan
by rebooting after an automatic scan has occurred and see if it boots in
a significantly shorter time.

Another feature of Norton is that it prevents registry changes which
System Restore tries to implement when you try to restore to an earlier
time. You need to turn off this Norton feature when using System Restore
to go back to earlier registry settings.
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/symantecdoc1.html

However, I do not think using System Restore to resolve a slow boot
problem was the correct solution given what we now know about your
system.

What are your anti-spyware arrangements? What firewall are you using?

I will take care of what you suggested in the last 2 posts on Sunday.
I have Norton Antivirus 2007. I don't think I have Zone Alarm.
Thank you.
It is likely that an allocation of 12% has been made to System
Restore on your C partition which is over generous. I would reduce
it to 700 mb. Right click your My Computer icon on the Desktop and
select System Restore. Place the cursor on your C drive select
Settings but this time find the slider and drag it to the left until
it reads 700 mb and exit. When you get to the Settings screen click
on Apply and OK and exit.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp
to Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

What version of Norton and what version of Zone Alarm do you have?

Norton does a full system scan weekly. It has inbound firewall, virus and
spyware protection, and automatic updates.
SpyBot, Ad-aware 6.0, ad-watch 3.0.

The original slow startup was a few minutes (maybe 3, I did not time it).
(I added the RAM last fall, hoping it would speed things up.) I tried to
eliminate some of the programs at startup. (I think computer was in custom
startup mode.) After I did that I was getting error message, so I re-checked
the boxes that I unchecked and re-booted. That is when the startup included
a lot more programs in the tray than before, and it took lot longer. I think
I then tried normal startup instead of custom startup, but nothing worked. At
this point I tried the System Restore to get back to before I started
screwing things up. I also removed programs, using add & remove in the
control panel, that I no longer use but were in the startup. I have not
rebooted since we began to correspond, but I will do that now to see what
happens.

Thank you

by rebooting after an automatic scan has occurred and see if it boots in
a significantly shorter time.

By exel do you mean excel.exe i.e. Microsoft Excel?

I use Excel a lot but it is not loaded when I boot. It loads on demand.

The HP Automatic Update service loads at boot up and others have found
stopping this service from doing so helps solve a slow boot. Look in the
HP software and see if you can turn this service off.

You can use Process Explorer to get the Command Line for this service.

Process Explorer provides more information than Task Manager.

Download Process Explorer.

For further information about Process Explorer see here:

A new addition to Process Explorer is that you can now right click on a
process and search Online for relevant information.

Norton does a full system scan weekly. It has inbound firewall, virus

SpyBot, Ad-aware 6.0, ad-watch 3.0.

The original slow startup was a few minutes (maybe 3, I did not time
it). (I added the RAM last fall, hoping it would speed things up.) I
tried to eliminate some of the programs at startup. (I think computer
was in custom startup mode.) After I did that I was getting error
message, so I re-checked the boxes that I unchecked and re-booted.
That is when the startup included a lot more programs in the tray
than before, and it took lot longer. I think I then tried normal
startup instead of custom startup, but nothing worked. At this point
I tried the System Restore to get back to before I started screwing
things up. I also removed programs, using add & remove in the

have not rebooted since we began to correspond, but I will do that

You still have not answered this question.

Your memory peak is large. You should be able to gather more
information from Task Manager. With the Processes tab open select
View, Select, Columns and check the boxes before Peak Memory Usage
and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures for the 6 processes
using the largest amounts? You need to name the processes and supply
the corresponding figures

Originally you had two problems. A slow start up and an inability to
use System Restore to go back to an earlier point in time. It seems
to me that Norton Anti-Virus 2007 could be responsible for both
problems.

Norton requires lots of resources in terms of memory and CPU
capacity to run effectively. Many users have dumped it for this
reason. When you boot your computer most anti-virus programmes
automatically scan. Check your Norton to see when it is scheduled to
automatically scan. If it only scans automatically on a daily basis
then change the timing to a more convenient time. Also you can test
the impact of an automatic scan by rebooting after an automatic scan

Does hp auto update for all in one affect other functions?

That's why you use autoruns to disable and not remove the StartUp item.
You can then check what affect disabling has.

Others have been successful so it is just a matter of finding the right
way to do it. My HP software predates the introduction of the auto
update feature.

The information in this link may help:
HP Software Update runs automatically at startup from: C:\Program
Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe. Since the
printer driver dates back to 2004, HP is probably not going to update it
again. I prevented this from running automatically (but did not
uninstall it). Turns out it's not necessary, the printer still works
over the wired Ethernet connection.
