System Restore

Today 12/19 I got the dreaded blue screen while using Google's Map Street
View.
after powering down and rebooting I followed all the instructions, including
a complete scan with Norton's, and a complete "C" drive chkdsk. I tried to
run a System Restore to numerous checkpoints but none are being accepted. My
computer seems to be OK at this time, but has anyone had that experience of
not being able to complete the Restore?

its likely that norton is
preventing any changes
to occur to your system,
eventhough it is the system
restore feature.

so you will have to first
disable norton or uninstall it.

however, perhaps you can
try booting into safemode and
simply uninstall that recent
program "or" initiate a clean
boot.

a clean boot is done by
opening msconfig in safemode
then disabling all your startups.

then go to the services tab and
hide all microsoft services.

then disable what remains and
attempt to reboot normal mode
again.

Was this a single blue screen or has it occurred more thamn once?. What
was the Stop Error report?

You will be able to get some details of the blue screen error in the
System log of Event Viewer.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

What is the CPU and how much RAM does your computer have? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get this
information.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

Hope this helps.

I didn't copy down the error , but I was able to do the restore due to
another answer on this site. There was a protection setting on Norton's that
I unchecked reran the restore and was able to reset to the last available
windows safe check point. Thanks for your response and help.

GEEZ! Are you related to "nass"??

While you were busy typing that all out (probably just copied and
pasted it), the OP found a fix that involved changing a Norton
setting. Norton WAS mentioned in the OP's post.

There were two problems. The Stop Error using Google's Map Street View
and the failure to restore the computer setting to an earlier date using
system restore. I was addressing the first problem not the second. Don
has resolved the second problem. It remains to be seen whether the first
problem has ben solved using System Restore.
