Unable to open .jpg files directly

Hi all

I have a persistant re occuring problem over the past couple of weeks.

Every few days i try to open various emails via the paperclip with
attchments such as .jpg files and the window opens up
" Windows cannot find"xxxxxxxx.jpg". Kake sure you have typed the name
correctly and then try again."
I can only open them if i save the attachment this happens to all emails
inmy inbox.

I have cured this in the past by doing a system restore going back a couple
of days and things are good for 2 or 3 days then the same thing happens.

Any suggestions for a permanent cure?

I have the exact same problem; it's been on-going for at least a month now.
Unfortunately, I don't have a solution to offer. I tried changing my default
program (for .jpg files) to Windows Photo Gallery, but that didn't accomplish
anything. Hopefully someone will come up with something.

I started having this same problem about a month ago and it persists. How
can you fix this? Is there a windows vista solution to the problem?

Have you installed IE8?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Is "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Vista (KB969897)"
listed in Installed Updates?

Just asking for now!! Do NOT use such a Restore Point yet!! => Do you have
an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?

If you do the following, does the behavior persist?

=> Start | All Programs | right-click on Windows Mail | select Properties
| Start in <=delete the value here (leaving it empty/blank) & OK your way
out.

NB: Uninstalling IE8 (cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700) should
resolve the behavior but you should not have encountered it in the first
place if IE8 was installed properly; cf.

HI All

I think MS may have fixed it

Got back to this problem today and was reading various fix theorys

Then noted that there was an update available.

Down loaded it etc and closed and reopened windows mail and it works.

Update for microsoft windows (KB972636)

so let see how it goes

Hmmm. According to Microsoft, KB972636 only affects the list of sites
needing 'Compatibility View' in IE8. But MS has been known to sneak in
unannounced fixes. :)

Spoke too soon Im afraid still have the problem reoccur.

If i shut down WM and reopen it appears to be OK for a while and the goes
wrong.

HI Have noted that a simple closing of WM and reopening cures the problem.

However the problem occurs possibly within a 24hr period.
Could it be as the clock changes from 00.00 to 00.01

Now heres the thing.

This problem seem to only affect my identity and not 2 others

just a thought

No, this not of any influence.

Sometimes closing is enough.
Mostly not. Emptying the TIF (temporary internet files) may help for a
while, but the problem will come back.

AFAICS it only *seems* to be of help.
If one creates a new user attachments work fine initially. But only
initially. After having worked for a while with opening attachments, the
problem will appear. In affected systems it's only a matter if time.
