Had same problem - with ghost emails that I could not delete and got unknown
error. I saw an earlier post that was "readable" and tried it tonight.
first - turn off scan emails in your Virus program
Close windows email
open task manager - processes Tab: end porcess for Winmail.exe Applications
Tab: end Task
Go to Start, All Programs, Accesories, Windows Explorer, Computer, Local
Disc (C), Users, Your name (or whatever you called yourself), AppData, Local,
Microsoft, Windows Mail.

Copy the whole Windows Mail folder to a disc or another location (desktop etc)
You may want to rename this file Windows Mail 2 (this is in case something
goes wrong)

Go back to original windows Mail Folder (see above - the one you just
copies) and locate the file named WindowsMail.MSMessageStore Delete this
file. Then delete the same file in the BackUp folder.

Close all windows and restart the computer.

The ghost email was gone. I was able to send, etc.
This worked for me. Hope it works for you......
And thankyou to Bernice who discovered this fix.

See the post by Judy entitled "RE: message will not delete or moved from Inbox".
It has the detailed procedure for fixing that problem
No guarantee that the problem won't come back.

As an alternate, you may want to use a different email program
such as Outlook or Thunderbird.

I'm having the same problem. The email is in my Outbox and seems to be
keeping other emails from sending. When I try to delete it I get the same
error message. Now that we all know we hate Windows Mail, does anyone have a
solution?

I love the Microsoft sends you to Communities to let us all work it
out ourselves instead of sending us to a Help function with some actual
answers!

To add insult to injury, I see Microsoft employees posting helpful
replies in some of the other newsgroups, like
microsoft.public.windows.vista.networking_sharing.
So far, no MS employee has dared to show up in this newsgroup.
It goes to show how much priority WinMail has with Microsoft.

First thing is to remove McAfee or Norton AV and antispam from the computer
if they exist. You may need to visit their website to fully uninstall the
product. Then get something less invasive. There are a number of free
antivirus programs, but with any you have to disable email scanning. See
www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

After that, the only solution so far is to wipe out the database. So go to
Tools | Options | Maintenance | Advanced | Store Folder to find the message
store location. Then move everything under that Windows Mail directory to
another directory. Then restart WinMail and it will open fresh with nothing
in the database. You can then add your accounts and if they work correctly
then you can use File | Import | Messages and choose WinMail format and
point to the directory to which you moved the files.

Hi, I checked out Judy's reply and went through the process and got to users
then my name and could not find the AppData anywhere in there......help
please. It appears neither Microsoft nor Dell feels responsible for this
issue. I have had my Laptop with Vista for two months and turns out it is
just an expensive paperweight....
Thanks for any help you would have for me.

In order to see AppData and other hidden folders, go to the
Folder Options applet in Control Panel, click the View tab,
and select "Show hidden files and folders."

In what way does it not work? Did you try all the suggested fixes?
Yes, using a different email program will be a solution.

If you move everything from the message store directory to another
directory, then WinMail will start fresh.

Unfortunately even that doesn't work. It seems to just restore from a backup
somewhere. Also, I tried pointing to a new message store location but it just
changed it back to the default after I restarted Mail. It's looking like time
to abandon Windows Mail ...

Move EVERYTHING under the directory including all subdirectories. Make it
completely empty.

Graham, you have to delete everything in the Windows Mail Folder. I did just
like Judy and made a copy/ backup to my desktop, and just deleted the
messagestore database file and restarted the PC and then WM but everything
came back. This time I did as Steve said and made sure that the entire Folder
structure under Windows Mail was cleared out (I shift Deleted) and it came up
empty, I then copied back the folders I wanted and Bobs your Uncle its
working again without that bloody e-mail that I had stuck.

Ditto, from me, too. I guess I would consider this helpful if Microsoft
would post how to fix it!!!!!!!!!Mail. I wish I had OE back!

You shouldn't have to move all the folders. Make sure windows mail is not
running the delete the file WindowsMail.MSMessageStore for teh Windows Mail
folder and restart Windows mailo if this does not work delete this file and
also the same file name in the Windows Mail\Backup\New folder. Then restart
windows mail you may lose the messages that have not been sent so you may
want to move them out of the outbox before you do this.
