Unable to access Hard Drive

I am trying to help a friend with her computer. I was not present
when her problem began so I can not give a detailed account of what
was happening when it first failed. I will tell you what I know and
pray someone has a solution.

She is using Windows XP, home edition.

She believes the problem is a result of something that happened when
she was doing a system restore. She was doing a system restore because
one of her applications - camera software (I do not know the actual
software) was not working correctly. When her first restore did not
work she tried going back to an earlier restore point. She believes
this restore point was when she was having troubles with her anti-virus
software because she got a error message from that software. That is
justspeculation at this point.

Current status. Unable to boot up in normal or safe mode. Error
messages for both modes are identical.

Error messages indicate that winlogon.exe can not find 3 separate files:

shlwapi.dll
services.exe
lsass.exe

When I saw this I thought I could copy them off my PC and put on hers.
All those files are located in my c:\windows\system32 directory and also
in the c:\windows\i386 directory.

Took my boot disk over and booted up from floppy but was unable to
access the c: drive. So I took my Norton anti-virus back up disks and
tried to scan C: drive for virus. Norton unable to access c: drive.

I tried interrupting the boot up process with F5 key but none of the
options allows me access to the c: drive. If memory serves one of the
options used to be to boot to the c: prompt. That is unavailable now!!

My friend purchased PC with operating system already installed. She
does not have XP os disk. She does have a factory provided backup CD
that will restore system but that would be back to factory
configuration. Years of updates and other files would be lost.

I am stuck with a capital S. Can anyone point me in the direction of a
solution. She is prepared to use the factory configuration CD but only
as a last option.

Many thanks in advance.

you might try using your windows cd. select new install and at the option
select repair wndows. this migh help to restore only the system files that
are vital for the c drive........ you might have to access the cmos and
ensure that the boot up is the cd drive and not the floppy. also ensure that
the c drive is also indicated....
