Turn off microphone in XP

How do you turn off the microphone? While recording with
Cubase on a direct connection through a audiophile USB
device, the recording picks up sounds in the room too.

Can't you just double click on the small sound icon in the systray and mute
the microphone or turn down its volume?

Or you could simply unplug your microphone from your soundcard while recording through the direct connection. Or you can do what was mentioned by "wnor"
