Trouble Starting Up

OK, just to let you guys now I'm computer illeterate so please oversymplify
your answers - don't worry, I won't feel patronised!

Just before I went on holiday last week, my computer crashed and I decided
to just leave it until I got back. Now that I'm back, I was greeted with
this message:
"We apologize for the inconvience, but Windows did not start
succesfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this"
It then goes on to give me five options to start Windows up, all of them are
unsuccesful in getting it started:
"Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration
Start Windows Normally"

As I said, no luck with any of them.

I don't recall installing any software or hardware that caused the system to
crash like this, so I'm really don't understand what's going on.

Is there anyway that a computer idiot like me can get things going again or
will I have to get a professional in to have a look at it?

Would really appreciate it if anyone could help out...

Cheers,
Phil
