Windows Start Up

When I turn on my computer from it's off state I'm seeing a message about a
hardware or software change. No hardware changes were made. Tried to start
in safe mode and got this list, all the drivers,
multi(0)disk(0)partition(1)Windows\system....... Windows will not start.

I reviewed the article and although I do have the original installation disc
i would like to salvage the data rather than erase it. Can I just start the
process by boot from the cd and then stop before a complete repair install is
performed?

A repair setup, unless you are faced with a damaged hard drive, should
result in saving all your data as well as the current settings.
