trouble setting up newsgroup with outlook express

Hi All,

I have been trying to follow instructions to set up outlook express to view
the newsgroups. All goes well until I try to "launch" the newsgroup.

I went through the instructions at
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/outlookexpressnewreader.htm#2003 and was
fine up to point #7. When I try to get into the newsgroup subscription list,
the following error is displayed.

Unable to connect to server: with the following details:

Configuration:
Account: msnews.microsoft.com
Server: msnews.microsoft.com
Protocol: NNTP
Port: 119
Secure(SSL): 0
Code: 800ccc0e

I am trying to use this through a work computer (almost all my "problems"
with microsoft products are generated at work, hence, finding answers at work
is best.)

Does anyone know what this means? Or how to resolve it? Could it be
something work has imposed to stop people chatting over chat boards? I am
using Windows XP Professional.

Thanks,

Fiona Nelson

I believe the server name should simply be news.microsoft.com, without the
ms in front of it..

More than likely port 119 is blocked at work.

No, she has the right settings, I suspect that her employer has port 119
blocked.

Thanks for replying everyone. I figured this must be the case, so it looks
like I'll have to just use the web portal. So far it's been OK, but I know
that I'm losing functionality and power, which is annoying.

Ah, well. Maybe I should save up my questions till I get home, but then how
would I pass the day? :)

Fiona--with the cooperation of the IT types, Port 119 could be unblocked on
whatever firewalls are in place--I don't know the situation there because
you don't say what if any SP you're using (ICF or Win Firewall + NAT from
router) plus any corporate at work. But one thing I do know that (and
maybe someone will explain, I hope), that compared to OE's NNTP newsreader,
or one of the 3rd party newsreaders you could certainly sub for it, using
the web portal's html is going to leave you with the *long end of a very
short stick.*

*Page loading from the MSFT community web portals is slow as molasses for
any group you access that way.* Further, downloading is slow. You have a
fraction of the functionality that OE does, and once you explore OE's
newsreader thorougly you'll find that there are many things MSFT could have
done with it they haven't.

But there is no comparison. It takes forever for pages to load using that,
and you only get part of the downloaded messages, and it seems part of the
groups availalbe via that "format."

Maybe someone can explain why the web portal is so slow and inadequate any
time it's used.

Best,

Chad Harris

Chad,

Thanks for the explanation. I'm certainly aware of the limitations using
the web portal. It would astound me if the IT guys at work gave me
permission to use OE on this site. It is certainly not part of my core
responsibilities and the powers that be may frown on it!

I have been able to set it up at home and I can definitely see the
improvements, although I now have to work out how the newsgroup names
correlate to the ones used in the portal. It will take me a little bit of
time to work out how to use OE to it's best advantage, but I'll get there in
the end.

Thanks again to the people who take the time to answer here, you've saved me
hours of struggle in the past and no doubt will do so again!
